Dutch Oven Apple Pie Recipe: Founder’s Feast Campfire Classic

Howdy, campers! Buck “The Campfire King” McCoy here, and today I’m sharin’ my Dutch Oven Apple Pie Recipe, seasoned with Founder’s Feast for that rustic, wood-fired classic. As a former park ranger from Bozeman, Montana, I’ve baked pies over open flames under the stars, and this is pure campfire bliss. Let’s get cookin’!

Ingredients for Your Dutch Oven Apple Pie Recipe

  • 6 cups sliced apples (about 6 medium apples)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Founder’s Feast seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup butter, cubed
  • 2 pre-made pie crusts
  • Cast iron Dutch oven

How to Make Dutch Oven Apple Pie

  1. First, preheat your campfire with a bed of hot coals, placing a cast iron Dutch oven to heat up.
  2. Next, in a large bowl, mix sliced apples, sugar, flour, Founder’s Feast seasoning, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Then, line the bottom of the Dutch oven with one pie crust, pressing it against the sides.
  4. After that, pour apple mixture into the crust, dot with butter, then cover with the second pie crust, sealing the edges.
  5. Finally, cut a few slits in the top crust for steam, then place over the coals, adding more coals on top for even heat. Cook for 40-50 minutes, rotating occasionally, until the crust is golden and filling is bubbly. Remove from heat, let cool slightly, and serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

Campfire Cooking Tips

For the best Dutch Oven Apple Pie Recipe, keep the coals steady—rotate the Dutch oven for even heat. Use hardwood for a robust flavor. For more outdoor cooking wisdom, check out Serious Eats and AllRecipes.
