Ingredients for Your Smoked Pork Shoulder Recipe

  • 5-7 lb pork shoulder (Boston butt)
  • 3 tablespoons Founder’s Feast seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • Hickory wood chunks for smoking

How to Smoke Pork Shoulder

  1. First, trim excess fat from pork shoulder. Rub with mustard, then coat with Founder’s Feast seasoning, salt, and pepper. Wrap and refrigerate for 4-8 hours.
  2. Next, preheat smoker to 225°F with hickory wood chunks. Place pork shoulder fat-side up on the grates.
  3. Then, smoke for 6-8 hours, spritzing with a mix of apple cider vinegar and apple juice every hour, until internal temperature hits 165°F.
  4. After that, wrap pork in butcher paper or foil (Texas crutch) and continue smoking for 3-5 hours until internal temperature reaches 200-205°F.
  5. Finally, remove, rest in a cooler for 1 hour, then shred. Serve with BBQ sauce or on buns.

Smoking Tips from Smoke Daddy

For the best Smoked Pork Shoulder Recipe, maintain a steady 225°F—don’t rush it! Additionally, spritzing keeps the meat moist and builds that killer smoke ring. For more BBQ science, check Serious Eats.
